BALAY Mindanaw would be conducting an orientation on protocols during emergency situations for the disaster-prone villages of this city at its Peace Center in Barangay Bulua, here today.

The orientation is part of the Community-based Health and Disaster Preparedness to Strengthen Resilience in disaster-prone barangays in the city, a project of Balay Mindanaw under its Disaster Risk Reduction, Resiliency-building aned Emergency Assistance Mission (DR3AM) program.

Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) through the German Humanitarian Assistance, and Johanniter International Assistance of the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe (JUH), the project focuses on health and disaster preparedness in the city.

The project aims at reducing the number of fatalities and economic damages in future disasters through enhanced capacities, resources, networking of decentralized government bodies, national NGO and vulnerable communities in the city towards better disaster preparedness and greater disaster resilience.

On hand to assist Moeno will be DILG-City Director Jane Docallos,  and Allan Porcadilla, OIC of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDR RMO).

Balay Mindanaw came up with the project, which is being implemented in partnership with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, because of the (1) continuing need to increase understanding of the baran-gays on the concept and objectives of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), (2) health and medical needs (2a) at Sendong relocation sites and/or strategic health centers, and (2b) increasing incidence of dengue cases, among others, in the city.

Among the activities being conducted with the participating barangays are (1) training on disaster-adaptive structures (upgrading of health centers); (2) capacity-building: contingency planning, training on basic and intermediate Incident Command System; emergency evacuation and planning; sanitation and hygiene; simulation and drills; and mass orientations; (3) upgrading and equipping health centers; (4) installation of water filtration systems; and (5) provision of equipment for better and easier information dissemination and communication, especially immediately before during and after a disaster.

During the orientation, city mayor Oscar Moreno would also lead the hand-over of emergency equipment to 17 barangays in the city.

Among the equipment that Balay Mindanaw will hand over to the barangays are, among others, hand-held radios, laptops, and skyhydrant, a water filtration system from SkyJuice Foundation of Australia.

“Daghan kaayo salamat sa Balay mindanaw for giving us projects and for reaching out to our barangay,” said Jay Roa Pascual, chairman of Barangay Tignapoloan during the project agreement signing on September 8.

Among the participating barangays are Balulang, Bonbon, Bulua, Camaman-an, Carmen, Gusa, Kauswagan, Lapasan, Lumbia, Mambuaya, Macasandig, Pagatpat, Patag, Tablon, Tuburan, and Tumpagon. (Cong B. Corrales)
