Considered as one of the worst plane tragedies in the country, Flight 387 crashed in Claveria on Feb. 2, 1998, killing all 104 on board, including five foreigners. The crash site is located 42 kilometers east of the Lumbia airport where it was supposed to land.

Today, a shrine stands at the crash site, and is the venue of an annual commemoration program.

Emano said he has informed Cebu Pacific Air, and sent invitation letters to the families of those who died in the crash.

The commemoration starts with a Mass, and would be followed by a trail run from four to 21 kilometers.

“We are doing something different this year. We will have a ‘falls hopping’ on Sunday to promote the tourism potentials of the place,” Emano said.

The place is surrounded by several water falls.

“We offer our solemn remembrance to all of the victims, and thank them for the good the tragedy has brought to all of us, particularly air travelers,” said Emano.

The crash led to the revision and adoption of several rules in air travel.

“For one, it has corrected a long standing anomaly in maps of the Air Transportation  Office that Mt. Sumagaya is 5,000 feet mountain when it fact it is a 6,000 feet. We have also adopted a regulation banning commercial flights from making unscheduled stops anywhere other than what is printed,” Emano said. (pio/misor)
