SURIGAO City- The 10th Siargao International Game Fishing Tournament will officially open on April 6, 2017 at 4pm at the Boulevard in the island town of Pilar, Surigao del Norte in Siargao Island.

“Siargao Island is the surfing capital of the Philippines now also the game fishing capital of the country. One will have lots of fun due many scheduled activities aside from game fishing like Island Discovery tour, cooking, culinary arts contest, street dancing, ” says Surigao del Norte Governor Sol Forcadilla Matugas during press conference held here at the Surigao del Norte Convention Center for the launching of the annual international tournament.

Matugas said at least 20 foreign anglers from Russia, U.K. Australia, Hongkong, Europe already signified to join with some already have registered for the contest with registration still on-going until April 6.

Last year some 80 anglers  from both local and international joined the 9th Siargao International Game Fishing Tournament.

It was disclosed that bigger prizes await winners in various categories in the annual sports fishing event.

Prominent national figures already signified to grace the occasion, says Surigao del Norte provincial tourism officer Ivonnie Dagasdas.

She also disclosed that for the first time ever they received a large amount of funds from the national government particularly from the Department of Tourism.

“With direct flight almost daily from Manila to Siargao through SkyJet plus, an additional P10 million fund from Department of Tourism a big thanks to Secretary Wanda Tiu, the first time such amount was contributed by the national government and happened only during this Duterte administration as in the past there were no such huge contribution from DOT only now. This year’s tournament will be the biggest ever to be held in the country,” Matugas concludes.
