Senior Supt. Ronnie Francis Cariaga, city police director, identified the wounded as Insp. Cris Cadelina.

Cadelina was leading members of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s bomb squad when the grenade, planted near a Multicab van, went off while bomb experts were preparing to detonate it.

Cadelina was rushed to a hospital. Cariaga said the police official was already out of danger.

Cariaga said investigators were looking for one Marine Corporal Geogelon Palmero who is believed to be the owner of the grenade.

Police ruled out terrorism as motive for the grenade planting.

“Ang initial  observation nako adto directed raman   ang ang granada sa  certain individual nga gi-initan sa suspect. It was an ordinary criminal act,” Cariaga said.

Senior Insp. Ryan Igualdo, deputy chief of the Carmen police, said whoever planted the grenade removed its pin.

Bomb experts from Cocpo quickly responded after they were informed that there was a grenade in the area. They then started setting up a barricade of used tires but the grenade exploded just before they could finish what they were doing. A shrapnel hit Cadelina in the hand.

Igualdo said they learned that there was a commotion at Corporal Palmero’s house the night before.
