A VEHICLE delivering bootleg fuel to street vendors caught fire that spread and destroyed houses and stores in Opol, Misamis Oriental yesterday morning.

Insp. Franklin Pabelona, Opol fire station chief, said the fire razed to the ground some 10 houses and seven commercial establishments at around 9:30 am in  Barangay Barra, Opol town.

Initial estimates of structural damages  were placed at P200 thousand.

No one was injured in the fire that spread after a pick-up truck-type Multicab  owned by 45-year old Ivan Agot Casil of Zone 9, Barangay Bulua, this city, caught fire, said Pabelona.

He said the vehicle was being used to deliver bootleg gasoline to still unidentified retailers in Barra when the fire broke out while it was parked.

Casil confirmed that the vehicle was used in the delivery of gasoline but he denied that the fire originated from his vehicle.

Casil said the fire originated from one of the houses.

The fire bureau however said investigation showed that Casil’s vehicle caught fire and exploded, and the fire quickly spread.

Opol Mayor Maximino Seno ordered an investigation into the questionable sale of gasoline in bottles in the streets of Opol by vendors.

Seno said he also wants the vendors identified.

He said he has long ordered the sale of bottled gasoline in the streets stopped in his town. (nitz arancon)
