AN engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Davao Region revealed that the traffic flow at the Macarthur Highway and Quirino Avenue will be at snail pace once the rehabilitation of the Generoso Bridge II goes full blast with the arrival of more construction equipment.

Speaking at the Kapehan Sa SM, engineer Alvin Cabuenas of the DPWH-11 said the use of heavier equipment entails closing down the bridge fully to fast-track the repair of the bridge’s piers and embankments.

Cabuenas said the bridge repair has a program duration of 6 months and 12 days, and two months have been used up for the ground and board filing preparations.

“The repair works are programmed to be finished by October, when we are already confident that the bridge can hold even stronger flood,” he said.

Cabuena said the bridge repair has a P63-million budget and is being worked upon by a Cebu-based contractor who won the project bidding.

He also clarified that the repair work at the Bolton Bridge I is originally set for 10 days starting May 18, two weeks before the opening of classes.

Cabuena said the work is hampered by heavy downpour which occurs at night.

He said the contractor of the project opted to work on the repairs at night in order not to hamper the traffic flow.

“Incidentally, the heavy rains at night delay the repair of the bridge,” Cabuena said.

He assured that the contractor of the project is ensuring that the Bolton Bridge will be more durable following the repair works. PIA
