Securing over P72 million budget for road construction and rehabilitation, attaining 688,587 tourist arrivals in 2018, and improving health and nutritional status among school-aged children, the Provincial Government of Camiguin bares 2018 key strategies that lead to making the island one of the most beautiful and peaceful islands in the country.

“My greatest aspiration as a woman leader, at the same time, a wife and a mother – is attaining a quality of life for all Camiguingnons where everyone enjoys the dividends of economic progress, and feels safe and secure in their homes and communities,” Provincial Governor Maria Luisa Romualdo said during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) on January 6.

Believing that the most important economic resource lies in human capital, the local government addressed the oral, physical and mental health of its people. In 2018, the province has attained 85 percent orally fit children and attended to 133 mentally-ill patients, making Camiguin the first province that gives importance to the usually neglected health problem in the country.

Romualdo also cited the significant improvement of the zero open defecation (ZOD) program implementation in the province from 18 percent compliance in 2017 to 79 percent in 2018 highlighting the 15 barangays in Camiguin which were already declared ZOD areas.

The strict implementation of the Smoke-Free Camiguin has also changed the face of the island from a top tourist destination to a healthy haven for tourists and residents as it accorded the Red Orchid Award. (PIA)
