Canatoy replaced Col. Roy Anthony Derilo who served as the battalion’s commander since Jan. 24, 2018.

Before he took over as the battalion’s commander, Canatoy served as assistant chief of staff for personnel of the 4th Infantry Division based in Camp Evangelista in this city.

Derilo merely traded places with Canatoy — he (Derilo) is now the assistant chief of staff for personnel.

Derilo said his time was up as 58th IB commander and “finished or unfinish ed, I should pass the paper.”

Canatoy said he doesn’t want bloodshed in the 58th IB’s jurisdiction during his watch.

He called on rebels to surrender and “let’s talk.”

Canatoy however assured he would continue what Derilo started if only to maintain the peace and order situation in the 58th IB’s jurisdiction.

As commander, Derilo supervised 51 battalion-size operations and 48 company-size operations that resulted in 32 armed engagements and the death of four rebels and seizure of 23 high-powered firearms, explosives, medicines and subversive documents.

Derilo has also been credited for the destruction of 59 New People’s Army encampments and surrender of 188 rebels.
