BEAUTY pageant candidates and beauty queens are known for their world peace mantra. Now that the Philippines has the Miss Universe crown again, after 42 years of hits and misses, it’s about time for Pinoys to adopt that mantra, too.

With the new year comes this renewal of vows to choose peace over conflict in everything that you do. The other party’s choice for conflict does not necessarily require a response of more conflict so that the whole city, province, region or country now has to deal with that conflict, too. Better stop at the city level, you know, hold a rally outside the Court of Appeals to, uh, grab city hall’s top seat while a case is hovering above the city mayor.

Can’t wait for the May election, huh? Despite the fact that ilang tulog na lang, May na! But to those who probably feel they won’t win anyway, better grab the throne now while the incumbent city mayor is busy facing cases of…Ajinomoto. That’s a lot of MSG there. Brrr. But opportunity may knock only once for the grabbers.

It’s supposedly violet and orange versus yellow now. But here’s a story that’s way much better: Batman versus Superman, with Wonder Woman as the, uh, leading lady? Fiction is usually more exciting than fact, or is it the other way around?

Violet, orange, yellow–three is a crowd. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman–perfect trio. But let’s wait for the movie to see if any of its characters can be compared to three of Cagayan de Oro’s political colors.

Meanwhile, the green team has joined the yellows and here’s hoping they will live happily ever after. Orange used to play good music with yellow, too–“I see trees of green, red roses too/I see them bloom for me and you/And I think to myself what a wonderful world.” Sigh. Don’t you love listening to the yellow incumbent mayor sing that?

Oh, I get it now. During the 2013 campaign season, if I’m not mistaken, it was only the yellow who sang, while the orange listened? No duet there–am I right or am I wrong?

And then, sh*t happened, and orange didn’t want to listen to yellow’s singing anymore despite the song’s, hmmm, hints at unity: “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky/Are also on the faces of people going by/I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do/But they’re really saying I love you.”

In the next election three years from now, there will be new color combinations in CDO’s political arena, and that’s simply the nature of politics, it’s not unique to CDO.

But there’s one violet candidate whose future is brighter compared to that of his teammates–he’s the one, the only District 2 congressional candidate. Why? Well, panahon na! English translation: It’s about time! His fans have been waiting for years!

“Panahon na” is a good catchy phrase. And there’s Sampaguita singing, “Panahon na para magsaya/Forget mo na ang problema/Pa-dance dance, para sumigla/Rock ‘n’ roll hanggang umaga.” Well, aside from that, his fans’ ultimate wish is for him to get out of the city council and move forward to Congress.

There are many other candidates and the trick is to make pakulo so they can be noticed. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, who was a beauty pageant candidate once upon a time, doesn’t need pakulo anymore because she has won! But she may need pakulo to be more popular, especially if her wish of becoming a Bond girl is one thing she wants to pursue after her reign as Miss Universe.

Life does have its treasury of pleasant surprises that can pave one’s way towards his version of success. It’s a long and winding road, like the one that Wurtzbach took–joining not only one or two but three Binibining Pilipinas contests–before finally taking home the crown as Miss Philippines-Universe and eventually becoming Miss Universe 2015. How about that for determination.

Meanwhile, we, Cagayanons, simply want world peace now. If that’s too much to ask, let’s start with a city-wide peace–for the violets and oranges to let the yellow mayor complete his first term so that in May, they can all say, May the best man win!
