THE capitol aims to boost the province’s revenues from its tourist destinations even as it plays host to the 19th National Convention of the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (Atop). The three-day event starts today.

Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano said the capitol is expecting over a thousand delegates from around the country to be here until Oct. 6.

Emano said winning the bid to be the association’s convention host against General Santos City was a necessary step towards promoting Misamis Oriental’s more than 20 tourist destinations.

He said he hopes that the national convention would put Misamis Oriental in the country’s tourism map, adding that the province can boast of excellent tourist destinations that are better than Boracay’s and many other tourist spots in the country.

Provincial tourism officer Jeffrey Saclot said the convention would be graced by Sen. JV Ejercito, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar and Tourism Secretary  Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

In the agenda of the convention, Saclot said, is an “immersion tour” — the delegates would be brought to the different tourist spots of Misamis Oriental.

The capitol has set aside between P2 million to P3 million for the convention, according to Saclot.

Atop president Minda Regis, for her part, said the group plans to draft and approve a resolution to commend Emano for his valuable support in making the three-day national convention possible.

Regis said Emano’s support to the group factored in the choice of Misamis Oriental as convention host during the bidding process.

“Misuporta man sila si Gov. Emano ug nag-allocate pag pundo, so sila ang nakada-og  sa bidding,” Regis said.

Regis said General Santos City was also supportive but did not allocate funds for the three-day national convention. (Nitz Arancon)
