Industry-first senior executive development platform to groom next generation agency leaders.

FWD Group (FWD) has announced the inaugural launch of the Elite Agency at INSEAD Program, an industry-first platform for top agency leaders to transform FWD’s next-generation sales force in a digitally-connected world.

From L to R: Cyrus Hsu Chih Sheng (AVP for Group Distribution, FWD Group), Purita “Pure” Tane, John Johnson (FWD Philippines Chief Distribution Officer), Marion “Mai” Victoriano, Peter Grimes (FWD Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer), Jecelle Ramos, and Ed Dante Latonio. Not in the photo: Aquarius “Russ” Juson (Supplied photo / PR)

This multi-year partnership with INSEAD, one of the world’s leading graduate business schools, provides a unique six-month intensive leadership and executive training program for top agency leaders in the Philippines and across the Asia region.

The FWD Elite Signature Program is part of FWD’s broader Elite Agency vision to build the most trusted, professional, productive, and digitally-enabled insurance advisory team in Asia. It aims to develop 100 world-class agency leaders that will lead and transform the way insurance sales is conducted, and ultimately support FWD’s wider vision to change the way people feel about insurance.

For the program’s inaugural class, five top agency leaders were chosen from each of these five FWD markets: the Philippines, Hong Kong & Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Representing FWD Philippines in the FWD Elite Signature program are five multi-awarded agency leaders from all over the country. They are Aquarius “Russ” Juson (SGA), Ed Dante Latonio (Carmel- Cebu), Jecelle Ramos (Fuji), Purita “Pure” Tane (Carmel-Manila), and Marion “Mai” Victoriano (Rainbow). Each went through a stringent selection process. They were chosen not only for their business performance, but also for their leadership potential, desire to grow and learn, and the ability to engage and operate in the digital world.

The Signature Program will be carried out in four distinct phases: (1) a three-month preparation on business planning and leadership agenda; (2) a one-week residential program at the INSEAD Fontainebleau campus in France, where they will learn the latest insights in sales management, leadership, and technology application; (3) a three-month coaching period to put their plan into action; and (4) a perpetual alumni platform that consists of master classes and regional networking opportunities.

To kick off on August 19 this year at INSEAD, the residential program will see selected participants take part in a rigorous and tailored program in Fontainebleau, that consists of a blend of bespoke workshops ranging from leadership and entrepreneurship training, the importance of a digital ecosystem, business plan construction, as well as a master class on the latest sales management system and processes.

“We are proud to announce this industry first in launching the Signature Program and welcoming our inaugural class. This program is a game-changer for agency distribution and will elevate the professionalism of not just our agency but the whole industry,” Binayak Dutta, FWD’s Group Chief Distribution Officer & Managing Director, Emerging Markets, said. Murang Kuryente on Friday announced its support for a more proactive role by the government in the power sector, in response to measures recently revealed by various proponents.

In particular, the consumer advocacy group agreed with proposals to create a Mindanao Power Corporation (Minpocor) centered around the Agus-Pulangi power system as a way for the government to help solve the power crisis, even as may run afoul of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, or EPIRA.

“The creation of a Minpocor will bring the government back to where it belongs – providing affordable and reliable power to the people as is their right. If EPIRA blocks this, then it is this law which should be reviewed and amended rather than the other way around. Our laws must follow our principles,” said Murang Kuryente spokesperson Gerry Arances.

Murang Kuryente has been consistent critic of EPIRA, as the law effectively gave the policymaking and price-setting powers over electricity to the private sector, providing incentives for collusion and cartel-like behavior for energy companies.

Arances asked Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the Senate energy committee, to help rehabilitate the Agus complex with 728 MW (megawatts) of installed capacity, and the Pulangi complex with 255 MW of installed capacity, instead of letting the government sell the two facilities to private interests. This capital city of Surigao del Norte province, which has been hosting the International Dragon Boat Festival since last year, is being positioned to become a center for water sports as even the Department of Tourism (DOT) and local officials push sustainable tourism in the country.

“Since Surigao City is a coastal city, we are very much suited to host such an event, like the Surigao International Dragon Boat Festival,” said Surigao City Mayor Ernesto U. Matugas Jr adding that with the success in hosting international race for the 2nd year, he wanted to develop Surigao City as a watersports hub that balance with eco-tourism promotion.

He said that it is natural for the people in Surigao to be in harmony for such events as people and those around living in communities around the city grew up in the coastal waters of Surigao.

International dragon boat competition would hopefully kick-start a trend for the city, according to Matugas.

“This dragon boat race is very important as it would set as a landmark for our city,” he said.

Surigao City has a total of 17 islands and islets and is comprised of 54 barangays, 33 in the mainland with 21 islands barangays.

Arturo P. Boncato Jr, Undersecretary of DOT expressed optimism with the direction Surigao City is headed.

Boncato said that the dragon boat festival is one of the most sustainable activities that the city like Surigao can pursue; it does not involve fuels or anything that will harm the environment. “With that we will support Surigao City and we will focus on the soaring of sustainable tourism, as it is the key to the future, with it we are able to provide opportunity to everybody,” said Boncato.

Surigao City and Surigao del Norte province has a huge role in the growth of tourism in the Philippines, its contribution to the tourism sector of the Philippines, being part of Mindanao.

“With that we can hopefully brand surigao City as a dragon boat and watersport destination in this part of the world,” Boncato added.

DOT Caraga Regional Director Ana Nuguid expressed that part of the region’s trust is to push forward and create Caraga Region as a premier international sports-tourism destination.

She added that while the international dragon boat festival is on its second year, other international sporting events that has drawn tourists into the region and the province of Surigao del Norte has been going on for several years.

“This year the Siargao International Surfing Cup with be on its 25th year, that’s the longest running international independent sporting event in the Philippines. We just had our 12th year with our International Game Fishing Tournament in Pilar Town last April and then we will be having our 3rd Siargao International Marathon race in Del Carmen town,” said Nuguid.

The organizers of the 2nd Surigao International Dragon Boat Festival stated that they are expecting a much bigger event next year with more international and teams from the Philippines competing in the race.

This year a total of 19 teams from the Philippines and three teams from China competed in the dragon boat competition.

Some 7,500 active members of Mindanao Alliance of Land Transport and General Workers Union (MALTU) has denounced the recent takeover of new management of Yanson Group of Bus Company (YGBC) head office in Bacolod City.

In a manifesto signed by MALTU founder and administrator Jose B. Ares and its presidents all over Mindanao comprised of seven branches of Rural Transit Mindanao Inc. (RTMI); Bachelor Express Inc. (BEI) and the Mindanao Star Bus Transport Inc. (MSBTI) said they received disturbing news that a new group of top management has reportedly an attempt to oust Vallacar Transit Inc. (VTI) President and CEO Leo Rey Yanson and several vice-presidents of the head office.

On Sunday, lawyer Shiela Sison issued a press statement saying that the board of directors of VTI “announces the appointment of Roy V. Yanson as its new company President effective immediately, replacing Leo Rey Yanson who will continue to serve as Director and member of the Board.”

The change in leadership was the result of a special board meeting held Sunday where the board also replaced corporate officers “who will work with the new company President to ensure a smooth transition of the transport firm’s administration.”

“We vehemently condemn the unprecedented move of the new management team as we are the most vulnerable and affected by such irresponsible actions. It will bring us anxiety and confusion because the union is supposed to be the bridge between the management and the workers of YGBC in Mindanao and we are at a loss of what to tell our members, if they would ask us of what was happening on top,” the manifesto stated.

The MALTU leaders admitted that they were dismayed, and scandalized expecting top management to suppose be the models of teamwork and industrial peace, yet the squabble is showed otherwise the values to so called “Work Horse” below.

Union leaders also condemn the takeover of the new management because they long suffered for the past leadership before Leo Rey Yanson .

They claimed that burial of payment benefits, vacation leave, incentives of drivers and conductors and remittances of union dues were delayed that they could have filed cases of Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) and rallied at the terminals and this was attended immediately during the management incumbency of Leo Rey Yanson.

“We the founder-administrator and presidents of MALTU Mindanao express our unqualified and total support to Sir Leo Rey Yanson and his management team who are so kind and so generous to the well-being of the workers in YGBC in Mindanao,” the union leaders pointed out.

MALTU also expressed support to Yanson who worked hard in improving the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and build worker’s facilities in Mindanao offices.

They further claim that they will not stop supporting Yanson until legal issues are cleared out by appropriate court and a court order declaring that the new top management of YGBC is legal.

Globe Telecom showed once again why it is one of the top organizations in the Philippines, after it was named among the 6 top-performing publicly-listed companies (PLCs) in the country under the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS) 2018.

Marisalve Ciocson-Co, Globe Senior Vice-President for Law and Compliance, Chief Compliance Officer, and Assistant Corporate Secretary, received the award for the company at the recent ACGS recognition ceremony, which celebrate PLCs that have put in significant effort to promote and sustain good governance within their respective organizations.

“We have done several corporate policy and practical improvements to uphold high standards of corporate governance, particularly in promoting accountability, transparency, and integrity in all aspects of the business. This recognition serves as a testament to our commitment to go beyond mere compliance when it comes to protecting the rights of all stakeholders, from our customers to our investors,” said Ciocson-Co.

ACGS is an instrument for assessing and ranking publicly-listed companies in six participating ASEAN countries, namely: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) is the appointed domestic ranking body for the Philippines. ICD assessed 247 publicly-listed Philippines companies. Of these, the average score was 62.3 points, and only 48 companies scored at least 80 points.

For ACGS 2018, eight Ayala companies were recognized by the ICD to be among the top performing PLCs overall in the domestic assessment. Two of which ranked among the six top-performing PLCs. Alongside Globe was Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) in the top 6. Ayala Corporation (AC), Manila Water Company, Inc. (MWC), Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Cebu Holdings, Incorporated (CHI), Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation (CPV), and Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc. (IMI) were also recognized.

Starting this year, the trophy indicates the level of the PLC’s compliance with the ASEAN Corporate Governance principles by arrows. Globe received a trophy with four arrows as part of the top 6 Philippine PLCs at the recognition ceremony. ICD said the top six PLCs obtained a score ranging from 110 points to 119 points. The possible maximum score in the ACGS is 130 points.

As a top performer, Globe was also among the top five Philippine PLCs by sector in the ACGS 2018 domestic assessment, bagging the top score among PLCs in the Services sector. Other Ayala companies were also recognized among the top five Philippine PLCs by sector. These were Ayala Corporation (holding firm), BPI (financial), Manila Water (industrial), as well as ALI, CHI and CPV (property).

ACGS was developed in 2011 by the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum (ACMF), in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The inaugural awarding ceremony was in 2015. ACGS is aligned with the corporate governance principles by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Companies are assessed on the scorecard’s key parts: rights of shareholders, equitable treatment of shareholders, role of stakeholders, disclosure and transparency, as well as board responsibilities (PR)

TELUS International Philippines embraced and celebrated Diversity and Inclusiveness in the workplace before many others. The company has active employee resource groups that highlight opportunities for more inclusive decision making across the leadership community; and one of those groups is Spectrum Philippines.  Its very own LGBTQIA+ resource group that encourages leaders and all team members to embrace gender diversity programs, and ensure the unique needs of the LGBTQIA+ community are considered in workplace programs like benefits, recruitment activities, and facilities.

As one of the country’s leading customer experience and business process solutions companies, TELUS International Philippines has six sites across Metro Manila.

As a cornerstone of the company’s commitment to inclusiveness, Spectrum, since its inception in 2014, has provided team members from the LGBTQIA+ community a platform to make the workplace culture more accepting, and the benefits and facilities more inclusive. Through the years, the group has become a venue for a healthy exchange of ideas and knowledge that enables team members to feel more comfortable and at home within the company. Spectrum Philippines currently has 867 members.

A recent study by the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce shows that BPO companies are at the forefront of creating gender-diverse workplaces in the country. For the last five years, TELUS International Philippines has set the benchmark in ensuring safe and thriving spaces for the LGBTQI+ and in developing allies in a highly welcoming environment.

Spectrum Philippines co-chair Bogs Orial, who has been with TELUS International Philippines for 15 years, has seen how the company has evolved into a sanctuary for gender diversity. “We know we are heading in the right direction when our team members can come to work as their true, full selves. Without fear of being judged or discriminated, our team members are inspired to be better in what they do,” says Orial.

Breaking down archaic office practices

To members of the LGBTQIA+ community, apart from dealing with outright discrimination, workplace practices like dress codes which do not take into consideration employees’ gender identity, the use of gender-specific bathrooms, and filling up administrative forms can present challenges that they must hurdle each day. Regional Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) on Wednesday ordered the ALU-TUCP to file their “position papers”, to justify their petition for a wage increase in region 10 in the amount at P782 per day across the board.

ALU-TUCP Regional Operation Director Nicandro Borja said that their legal counsel lawyer Jay Albarece already have their position papers to respond the Wage Board’s mandate.

According to Borja, 7 members of the Regional Wage Board in Region 10 wanted their petition not to be dismissed for Wage Increase in ALU.

In April 2019, the ALU-TUCP filed their petition at the Regional Wage Board for Wage Increase at a rate of 782 pesos per day across the Board, plus additional salary, for private sector employees in Region 10 that receive only minimum wages of 365 pesos per day across the Board.

“Kon ma-approve ang among petition, mahimo ang P1,147.00 kada adlaw ang atong suweldo dinhi  sa Region 10”,” Borja said.

Borja, who is a member of the Regional Wage Board, said that he has a  concern to the petition not to be dismissed by the Wage Board for wage increase in ALU, even this after the National Capital Region (NCT) Wage Board dismissed their Petition for wage increase in Metro Manila.

“I Will support  our Wage Increase Petition, even i am a member of wage board because, klaro kaayo nga na-ay supervening Condition sa atong economic situations,  kay misaka baya ang presyo sa mga palaliton,” Borja said.

Northern Mindanao Hog Growers Association (NMHGA) and the Bureau of Customs urged stakeholders of the livestock sector in the country to spread awareness on the adverse effects of the African Swine Fever (ASF) to the swine industry.

Earlier, NMHGA president Benjamin Albarece and  port collector John Simon of the Mindanao Container Terminal met as they both discussed the issues and concerns involving the ASF.

Dr. Albarece who specializes in the area of pig, cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, horse and fish shrimps.

Albarece said that with the help of the Bureau of Customs would enable them to have a synchronized action against the entry of the animal disease in the region.

During their meeting, , according to Albarece a technical discussion on ASF was held among them to include in the strengthening of the region’s biosecurity and quarantine measures.

Albarece even said that since the Philippines is highly-vulnerable to be infected by ASF, the region’s biosecurity was given emphasis during the discussion.

Albarece said that ASF is a contagious hemorrhagic viral disease among domestic and wild pigs that can spread rapidly regardless of borders.

ASF is a fatal animal disease affecting pigs and wild boars with up to 100-percent mortality, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.

The government has been campaigning against the disease following the outbreak in neighboring countries like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Mongolia, including active cases in 17 other countries.

Meanwhile, on his part Simon would also strengthened measures to prevent the entry of the ASF in the Mindanao Container Terminal.

Simon also pressed a nationwide calling to have a close inspection and monitoring of the entry of frozen and processed pork products, and the installation of additional footbaths in all ports of entry for heightened disease surveillance.

“It should be a closely monitoring to be implemented nationwide in all ports in the country to prevent the entry of banned meat products,” said Simon.

According to Simon, only importers with proper clearances and permits from the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Animal Industry, and FDA, among others, will be allowed to bring in meat products into the country.
