THE National Historical Commission of the Philippines has reminded Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano that the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” must be sung using only the Filipino language whether this be in the country or abroad.

In a letter addressed to Emano dated March 5, NHCP Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante told the governor that Sec. 36 of Heraldic Act (RA 8491) specifies that the lyrics to the national anthem, when sung, must not be translated to any dialects.

“As the government agency in charge on implementing  RA 8491, we wish to remind you (Emano) that the national anthem should be sung in Filipino in your provincial government office as well as in other offices and schools within your jurisdiction,” Escalante’s letter reads in part.

He added that the RA 8491 is a special law that protects the national symbols of the country including the national anthem.

“These symbols, such as Lupang Hinirang and the Philippine flag are products of our forefathers’ struggle for freedom,” said Escalante.

Escalante’s letter to Emano stems from a letter of City Councilor Zaldy Ocon to NHCP on Feb. 12.

Ocon asked the NHCP if the officials of Misamis Oriental have not violated any law by singing the national anthem in Bisaya at every flag raising ceremony at the capitol.
