Palao Domacodac Abantas, Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer said yesterday that the equipment for monitoring the presence of smog is located at the Medical Center Building in Palao, this city. However, personnel from neighboring Cagayan de Oro have been placed in charge of the equipment.

To note, forest fires have been raging in nearby countries of Indonesia and Malaysia. Many schools in Rian province in Sumatra have been reportedly closed because of the forest fires. This is because of the toxic levels of the smog or haze as a result of these fires.

There are forest fires every year in Indonesia and Malaysia, it was learned, but this year is said to be the worst.

It was also reported that orangutans in these countries have now been endangered further because of the smog resulting from the annual forest fires.
