Chinese paddlers to challenge dragon boat teams in Surigao

BUTUAN City – Three Chinese teams would compete against 19 groups from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao for the 2nd Surigao City International Dragon Boat Summer Festival in Surigao City on Saturday and Sunday.

The dragon boat teams from China are Shipai Youth Dragon Boat Club from Guangzhou, Shenzhen International and Dong Guan Wanjiang Rong Wei Dragon Boat Club.

Roselyn Armida Merlin, supervising operations officer of the Surigao City tourism office, said teams from Malaysia and Hong Kong that participated last year would not be competing this weekend due to conflicts in schedules.

Merlin said the Chinese have been competing in the dragon boat races in China for years and their participation would be a great challenge and experience for the Filipino teams.

The teams from the Philippines competing in the event are Speed Devilz from Manila, Black Manta Warriors of Cebu City, Umagu Dragon Boat Team and Bugsok Metro Dumaguete Paddlers, Waray Bugsay from Tacloban City;

Boracay Dragon Force, Samal Dragons, Pearl Farm Paddlers from Samal Island, CGY Oro Dragon Boat team and Liceo de Cagayan University Dragonoids from Cagayan de Oro;

Baku Uno Iligan Dragon Boat team, Fr. Saturnino Urios University Blue Dragons of Butuan City, Kujaw Tiger Dragons of Cortes town in Surigao del Sur and Bugsay Marajao of Surigao City.
