Have you tried churros? They’re filling and delicious, especially when served piping hot, fresh from the fryer. A churro is basically fried-dough pastry dusted in either cinnamon or icing sugar and usually served with rich chocolate dips. You can pair it with your favorite hot or cold drink but usually, the default choice would either be coffee or tea.

These days, churros have become so fancy and trendy that they now come in giant sizes. There are even stuffed churros now!

At Powerplant Mall in Rockwell, Makati, I visited the much talked about Churreria La Lola. As expected, there was a long queue. And for good reason. The giant Churros Clasicos were appetizing and the rich, luscious Belgian chocolate dip that came with my order was divine. Medium sized churros plus dip = Php 170. I made a mental note to try the stuffed churros next time (choices were nutella, dulce de leche, strawberry or peanut butter).

My favorite go-to place for churros in Manila, though, is, of course, Dulcinea. I first tried their famous Churros con Chocolate (Php 118) many years ago at their SM Megamall branch. Crunchy on the outside and with a generous amount of chocolate dip, it was definitely a sweet treat. If you happen to be in Makati, go to their Greenbelt 1 branch. It’s one of my favorite places to go to for afternoon escapes.

Now if you’re in Cagayan de Oro and have been craving for these choux-based snacks, don’t fret. Thankfully, on the local front, there’s a quaint little shop that sells churros. Located along Velez Street, Mai Crafts seems to be the only one that serves churros con tsokolate. I recently visited their newly rebranded store – Mai Crafts Boutique Cafe – and tried their churros. I think I paid Php 80 for a set composed of two churros and dip. Paired it with Americano coffee. I was a happy camper that afternoon.

I hope that more establishments could serve churros and other fried pastries. I think a business like that would definitely be a hit!

Send our Urbanlife Editor a note if you know of other places around Mindanao that sells churros and I’ll take note!
