THE city council here has approved an ordinance that puts more teeth on violators of child pornography, a city councilor said yesterday.

Councilor Edna Dahino, the principal author of the ordinance, said the “Anti-Pornography Ordinance of 2017” treats pornography as a violation of the civil rights of both men and women.

She said it was in line with the constitutional mandate of the state under Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009.

Pursuant to the ordinance, unlawful and prohibited acts include the hiring, employing, persuading, inducing or coercing any person to perform sexual acts.

The ordinance prescribes mall owners or operators, including lessors, to notify the Philippine National Police or the National Bureau of Investigation that pornography is being committed in their premises.

Dahino said the ordinance also provides for the creation of the Pornography Control Committee composed of a chairperson, a representative from the city council, five representatives from other sectors, and two other members representing cultural leaders and religious groups.

Dahino’s ordinance was reviewed and endorsed by the city council’s committees on women and family relations and on laws and rules. (pna)
