Club 88 trashes Subukin,126-107

They were no longer spring chickens but these former college varsity standouts still have the fire to play the hoops in the ongoing Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas – CDO Basketball Federation League at the Liceo de Cagayan University Gym.

Club 88 came up with a 5-0 slate in the elimination round of the seniors – 40 above division HNH Builders –sponsored pre-season of the SBP-CDOBF, beating undermanned Subukin ballclub, who ended three wins and two losses,  126 – 107 Thursday evening at the Liceo de Cagayan University Gym.

In the first game, HNH Builders joined the winning column by beating the Green Eagles ballclub 115 – 92.

Club 88 outran and out-hustled the Subukin ballclub which came with only seven players. Christopher Caretas and Owen Ubay-ubay exploded with 24 and 23 points respectively. Subukin tried to stay at a pace at the start of the 3rd quarter to close the score, 75-72 behind treys Allan Enteria who ended with 21 points, five from behind the arc. Bert Lazaro top-scored Subukin’s losing cause with 24 points, of this, four from beyond the arc.

Club 88 finished with five players scoring in double figures. “We’ll bounce back in the next game,” said Subukin’s Atty. Alfonso Vicente, who finished with 16 points.

Club 88 and Subukin will play for the championship on May 21 at the Liceo University Gym.

The tourney which is considered as the pre-season of the SBP-CDOBF will address grassroots basketball development and fitness among professional, many used to be stalwarts in college varsity basketball.

“We need to attract interest in the sports. When the school year starts, we will have an interschool tournament,” said Pong Dacoco, regional chairman of the SBP.

The seniors’ elimination ended with Club 88 5-0; Subukin 3-2; Eagles 2-3 and HNH Builders 1-4.

He added, they will also invite teams from other areas in northern Mindanao to join the SBP-CDOBF league.

Club 88: Caretas 24, Ubay-ubay, 23, Mandugo 16, Tamayo 12, Balbutin 12, Tongco 10, Kaamino 8, Armojallas 8, Django 7 Mahistrado 6.

Subukin: Enteria 21, Lazaro 21, Vicente 16, Navales 16, Penaflor 14, Marte 12, Dy 7.
