Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) will have its share of patrol cars from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) central office, the top brass at Camp Vicente Alagar assured, Friday.

In an interview over a local radio station, Police Regional Office 10 commander P/Chief Supt. Lyndel Desquitado clarified that the patrol cars for the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Gingoog, Ozamiz, Valencia, and Malaybalay will be in the next phase of distribution.

“Tanan man mahata-gan. But cities and provincial offices would receive a different kind of patrol cars unlike those who were given to the municipal police stations. Lahi ang ilang klase nga patrol cars,” Desquitado said. In fact, he added, the next phase of distribution will include fire trucks.

Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II distributed 84 patrol jeeps for provincial governments such as Misamis Oriental which received 23 patrol jeeps, 14 patrol jeeps for Lanao del Norte, five for Camiguin, and Dinagat Island with seven patrol jeeps at Camp Vicente Alagar, recently.

The patrol jeeps are part of the 1,490 vehicles distributed to all local governments across the country as part of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Capability Enhancement Program.

Desquitado said that he personally asked Roxas–while they were on board a helicopter en route to Tubud, Lanao del Norte–why Cagayan de Oro and other key cities in the region were not included in the distribution . He said the key cities in the region were not included in the first batch of the distribution because patrol cars for use in urban terrain are different from those for rural areas.

“Not only Cagayan de Oro but the entire Philippines, only the municipal stations were given patrol jeeps as an all-terrain vehicle like Mahendra. The patrol jeeps can likewise be used for disaster preparedness and response and medical emergencies in the municipalities,” Desquitado said.

Desquitado issued the statement amidst speculations that the city was not included in the recent distribution of patrol cars on purpose.

In his special report during the City Council’s regular session, Monday, Councilor Zaldy Ocon griped why the city was not a recipient of the distributed patrol cars.

“Not even one was given to the city for the PNP para unta naay magamit…I don’t see any logic why we are [sic] neglected,” Ocon said.

The City Council has adopted Resolution No. 12087-2015, requesting Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to include the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) as among the recipients in the DILG’s nationwide distribution of police patrol vehicles.
