The Balay Mindanao Foundation building stands on a piece of property in Barangay Bulua, this city. Police barged into the humanitarian organization’s building without a warrant Wednesday and searched for bombs at a time when the group is holding trauma sessions for survivors of the Marawi siege. Alexy Sonido, commander of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s City Mobile Force Unit, was promoted from major to lieutenant colonel.

Sonido’s unit figured in controversy two weeks ago after members of a K9 sub-unit under the CMFU barged into the Balay Mindanao Peace Center in Bulua and searched the non-government organization and participants of a training on trauma from Marawi City.

Police subsequently apologized for the warrantless search, and Sonido ordered two of his subordinates–M/Sgt. Faith Michael Cajelo and Cpl. Boyet Alupit–relieved as part of procedures when officers are under investigation.

Sonido is one of seven police majors in Region 10 who were promoted to lieutenant colonel. Over a hundred police officers in the region were given their promotions at Camp Alagar yesterday morning.
