MANILA – The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) says corn silage is a nutritious feed for carabaos, as it is a good source of protein and energy. Furthermore, it can be farmers’ supplementary income source.

Corn silage is produced from chopped corn plants sealed tight in a “silo” or container and then fermented for 2-3 weeks.

PCAARRD is supporting the Silage Production project of the Philippine CarabaoCenter.

The agency shared that one of the farmer entrepreneurs was able to produce 54,729 kg of corn silage in his two-hectare lot. It was sold at Php 191,551.50, and was able to get a net income of Php 66,661.60 after deducting the costs (labor, planting materials, pesticide and herbicide application, irrigation, materials for chopping and transportation, among others).

Thus, the farmer sees that corn silage market is big. pna
