THE city council’s energy committee has summoned executives of the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co. (Cepalco) to a meeting in order to tackle its proposal to increase its rates in the city to enable it to secure an additional 10 megawatts.

Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr., energy committee chairman, said the meeting would take place tomorrow.

The committee meeting was scheduled after the city council rejected Lao’s proposal for the legislature to ask the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to approve Cepalco’s petition to beef up the local power supply by 10 mw through a modular power generator set up at the Minergy plant in Barangay Tablon.

The generator was leased out to Cepalco’s sister company Minergy by the firm Aggreko which specializes on temporary power generation.

Lao said Cepalco still needs to clarify many things about the proposed deal, and explain exactly how it would affect power consumers in the city.

Cepalco, according to Lao, is seeking an increase of 22 centavos per kilowatthour from power consumers here for the Aggreko power.

Last week, the city council rejected Lao’s proposal to ask the ERC to give Cepalco the go-ahead.

Councilor Alexander Dacer objected to Lao’s proposal, saying the last thing Cagayanons need now is an increase in power rates.

“Wala nalang sad ko mo-oppose sa objection ni Councilor Dacer, kay na-a  man say iyang punto sa iyang objection,” said Lao.

The city council also tasked Lao’s committee to tackle again Cepalco’s petition for a rate increase as suggested by Councilor Edna Dahino, chair of the city council’s committee on trade and commerce.

Cepalco, based on it petition, sees a two-year lease contract with Minergy for the additional 10-mw power through the Aggreko modular generating set.
