DIGOS City, Davao del Sur–All the department heads of the Davao del Sur provincial government resigned en masse on Thursday just as Gov. Douglas Cagas started to work as the provincial chief executive.

Cagas was released from the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on Wednesday after posting a P1-million bail for a murder case that took place six years ago. Cagas was charged, and detained for the death of journalist Nestor Bedolido.

The move of the department heads, who are supporters of Davao Occidental Gov. Claude Bautista, was in protest of the return to his post of Gov. Cagas.

Following the mass resignation, Bautista held a press conference after the provincial officials sought his advice and help.

Bautista admitted that he had a healthy working relationship with them in his three years as Davao del Sur governor and that they admitted that they wanted to work with him in the new province.

He said he felt sorry for their 20-year careers but since they were also concerned with their personal safety, they have chosen to give up their respective positions.

Bautista said he welcomed them to work in Davao Occidental provincial government but he could not assure them that they would get the same position they had held in the past. (pna)
