Tago, Surigao del Sur — Another New People’s Army leader surrendered to the 36th Infantry Battalion at around 5 pm, Saturday at H36IB, Sitio Upper Mambago, Barangay Dayoan, Tago, Surigao del Sur.
The surenderee is identified as Jomar Martinez Mapando, alias Peter, 25, married, and a resident of Sitio San Isidro, Barangay Anilong, Rosario, Agusan del Sur.
Mapando is on “lie low” status and a former vice commanding officer of Platoon 3, Guerrilla Front 14, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee bringing along his homemade shotgun with ammunition and caliber .357 pistol with ammunition and other documents with high intelligence value.
Initial interview disclosed that, Mapando joined the organization when he was 17 years old out of his curiosity, aggressiveness, and adventurism. He further revealed that he joined the NPA because of promises for monetary support and alleviation from poverty.
Mapando decided to surrender because he was dismayed with their corrupt leaders and deceived by the false promises and experienced miserable life while inside the organization as he needs to endure less food and always on the run to evade government troops.
Since January, Mapando is the 75th NPA fighter who surrendered to the 36IB.
Lt. Col. Xerxes Trinidad, commanding officer of 36IB in his statement “The CNT leadership is in the verge of collapse as the organization has been experiencing a dilemma due to low state of morale and continuous surrenders of their leaders. We urge remaining CNT members to finally lay down their arms and live peaceful and normal lives with their loved ones. Abandon your maligned armed struggle and help the government bring development and long and lasting peace in our community.”
Mapando is still under the custody of the 36IB and undergoing interview and processing. He will be enrolled in the E-clip, the government’s intervention package for former rebels. (pr)
