THE regional office of the public works department in northern Mindanao has opted to keep mum over an assurance allegedly made by Public Works Secretary Mark Villar that the new coastal road in Lapasan would be opened for public use by November.

Vinah Maghinay, spokesperson of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Region 10, said she was directed by DPWH regional  director Virgilio Eduarte not to comment on the reported assurance attributed to Villar.

Villar supposedly posted this on his Facebook page: “This November, motorists will have access to the Cagayan De Oro Coastal Road – a 12.77 km highway that will serve as bypass from Brgy Gusa in CDO to Brgy. Igpit, Opol in Misamis Oriental. When completed, it is expected to reduce travel travel by 20 mins and reduce travel cost by 30%.”

Maghinay however said the DPWH regional office would rather not comment on Villar’s assurance given that negotiations with Barangay 33 chair Condrad Lim on a controversial section of the coastal road in Lapasan were ongoing. She said Director Eduarte was leading the negotiations with Lim.

A section of the new road where Lim developed through reclamation has prevented the DPWH from completting the project. The barangay chairman wants to get compensated. (nitz arancon)
