Several media practitioners came along to observe the proceedings.

Pigcarangan has a population of 3,117 with 702 households, 99 percent of them are Cebuanos, majority of them belonging to 20 to 24 age group with fishing, farming and construction work as sources of employment.

A total of 793,989 target households will be assessed for the Second Round Assessment in Northern Mindanao.

DSWD-10 Assistant Regional Director for Operations Aldersey dela Cruz, who led the kicked-off assessment yesterday at Tubod town, said the asessment will correct errors committed in the assessment six years ago, as they try to find the real poor people in this assessment.

The first round of Household Assessment was conducted in 2009 with a total of 338,749 households identified as poor.

A total of 2,505 Field workers comprising of area coordinators, area supervisors, enumerators, encoders and verifiers were trained and hired for the Second Round assessment.

Field workers proceed today to their assigned villages in the barangays and municipalities all over Northern Mindanao to conduct the household assessments.

An assessment is being conducted through “pockets of poverty” for the urban areas, identifying and assessing the areas only with the most number of households.

For the rural areas, saturation assessment will be done — covering all of the households for the assessment.

Prior to the assessment in Lanao del Norte, courtesy calls have be done to Lanao del Norte Provincial Governor Khalid Dimaporo, Tubod Mayor Nelieta Q. Noval and the barangay officials of Pigcarangan to solicit support and ensure smooth implementation of the assessment.

Gov. Dimaporo said the coming in of the national government, like DSWD, with their services, eases up the delivery of basic services in the community.

Dimaporo has assured DSWD that the province is willing to give its counterpart, including Non-Government Agencies, should they come to the province for implementation of services for his constituents.

Dela Cruz, meanwhile, has encourged everyone in the target areas to cooperate and answer the questions accurately during the assessment.

Eligible respondents of the assessment includes parents and children aged 18 years old and above. (Article by Cheng Ordonez, CDO)
