Eco-Bricks

A few months ago Local Initiative for Holistic Upbringing of Knowledge (LIHUK) initiated activities where eco brick making were being promoted; and workshops together with promotional videos and posters were being circulated to ensure quality eco bricks were produced.

Last October 19, 2018 the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Bachelor of Science in Science Education Students under the course BIO111 turned over 200 plus eco bricks and a day later the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants of Xavier University turned over more than 800 eco bricks to LIHUK.

We asked Marie Antonette Emata, CPA, MBA one of the teachers of XU School of Business and Management – Accountancy Department why they are requiring their students to make eco bricks

She said “one of the lessons in Economic Development and one of the major subjects on our freshmen is on the effects of the environment on development and vice versa. The teachers thought about a project to help the environment and encouraged them to be part of the eco brick advocacy.”

Meanwhile, USTP teacher of BIO111 Gelo Walag said “Currently, our university faces similar problems with other institutions, there are a lot of plastic waste by single-used plastic. Personally, I refuse using plastic straws in fast food chains, this is my own campaign to lessen plastic straws. I challenged my students to limit their plastic use and show them how plastic use can be reduced.”

He then added “I saw several campaigns on Facebook on utilizing plastics as Eco bricks last summer. It was that time I thought of requiring my students to do the same as a response to the problem we currently face in the university.”

For her part, Katrina Young JPIA Vice President for Social Engagements and Outreach said “JPIA wants to foster a sense of shared responsibility towards mother earth within each member. The organization spearheaded an activity conducted from late September to October that encouraged members to make their own Eco bricks.”

And an upcoming good news for the environment will be the “BASURUN 2.0” on November 25 at Brgy. Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City where participants will register with 3 eco bricks for free jersey and official registration.

I’d  like to Congratulae every one, whom, in one way or another made an impact for our children’s future.
