COMMISSION on Elections regional director Renato Magbutay yesterday warned those running for various positions in the May 14 barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan elections against engaging in premature campaigning.

Magbutay however did not elaborate what constitutes as premature campaigning except by saying that all candidates in the barangay and youth elections, including the incumbent barangay officials, must observe the Omnibus Election Code.

Magbutay said candidates are not allowed to campaign after they have secured their certificates of candidacy. He said the campaign period for the election starts on May 4 to 12.

“We will not hesitate to file appropriate actions against erring aspirants,” said Magbutay.

He said the filing of candidacy for both the barangay and SK elections will start on April 20.

“Pero akong gihangyo kadtong gusto mudagan nga muadto na daan sa Comelec office para mahibaw-an nila kung unsa ang requirement,” Magbutay said.

In another development, the Comelec’s regional chief said his office is now monitoring Lanao del Norte because some areas there are potential election “hotspots.”

The information, according to Magbutay, is based on the National Police’s data collected in 2006 and 2013.
