Iligan City — The Regional Director of the Environment Management Bureau-10 visited the city mayor Tuesday on account of concerns of the environment specially on the Central Materials Recovery Facility (CMRF) of the city which leaves much to be desired.

City Information Officer Jose Pantoja said EMB-10 regional director Reynaldo Digamo talked with City Mayor Celso Regencia about the said CMRF.

The facility, to note, is located at Bonbonon, an upland barangay over five kilometers away from the city in the Sitio of Bangko.

Pantoja admitted that leaches coming from the said facility pour into the Dodiongan River below making the waters murky with  some residents complain of skin diseases after bathing in the river.

However, he added that the city is doing something  about it to mitigate the concerns of the environment officer.

He  blames the previous administration of then mayor Lawrence Cruz who had built the facility from a loan of P238 million, and which, the city has been “very burdened” in paying.

The facility, to note, is not meant for an open dump site but the machines which at one time was envisioned to be “world-class” soon choked with tons and tons of unsegregated garbage, thus making it in time, an open dump site.

Pantoja also took a dig at lawyer Ranulfo Cenas, head of the City Environment Board here who “did not do something” about it but instead said that he is going “to file cases against  the mayor” and other officials.

To recall, a few weeks ago, Cenas was shot at on his way to his office which is near the mayor’s office at Palao, although the bullets missed Cenas.

There have been four accidents in the past two years, involving dump trucks going to the facility with two fatalities even as the other garbage personnel were injured.
