City fire marshal Chief Insp. Rommel Villafuerte said the fire broke out at around 10:50 pm on Tuesday at the first level of the market.

By the time firefighters came, the fire already spread to four market stalls, and was threatening to destroy the Cogon police station.

Villafuerte said the fire allegedly started in a stall leased out to Sehira Campong.

The cause of the fire is still being determined by investigators.

Villafuerte said no one was hurt in the fire that was placed under control at around 11:15 pm. The fire station declared a “fire-out” at 11:24 pm.

He placed the structural damages at P70 thousand.

Noy Ang, owner of Digital Precision Shop, claimed he lost at least P400 thousand worth of digital cameras and electronic devices in the fire.

Two other stalls were being subleased by 858 department store to Sahira Gampong and Amir Macarambon.

City hall awarded the department store a lease agreement a few years back.

Gampong said she lost some P1.2 million in the fire, and claimed she has no insurance coverage. She said there were pieces of jewelry in her stall.

“Nagsalig lage ko nga safe to kay private baya ni,” Gampong said. “Wala na ko kasabot unsa ako buhaton.”
