BUTUAN City––A 25-year old fisherman is facing a case for allegedly abusing a toddler in San Francisco, Surigao del Norte.
Detained at the San Francisco Municipal Police Station, the suspect Marlon Salamida denied abusing the one-year old girl in the coastal village of Oslao two weeks ago.

But the police said San Francisco health officer Dr. Pacita Madamba examined the baby, and found abrasions in the girl’s private parts, indicating insertion.

Police said that under the rape law, an insertion into a woman’s privates against her will is considered rape. PO3 Era Campillo said Salamida has submitted a counter affidavit, strongly denying that he abused the girl. The girl was entrusted by her 64-year old grandmother because her mother went to Manila to work. Campillo said the victim’s grandmother Hilaria Ruiz left the girl to Salamida, her nephew, because she had to go to another village to collect some money.

Campillo said that Ruiz noticed that the child was weak when she returned after an hour, and there were bloodstains on her genitalia the following morning. She said the grandmother reported the matter to authorities.

“He (Salamida) was the only mature person left in the house, and no one can testify in his favor. He was identified as the suspect because he was alone in the house with the girl,” Campillo added.
