DAVAO City — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has asked the spokesman of the National Democratic Front-Far South Mindanao, who surrendered recently, to relay a message on the ongoing efforts of government to bring peace in the countryside and shun the long-abandoned ideology of communism.
“He asked Nilo Legaspi, who was taken in Tulunan through the efforts of Gov. Daisy Fuentes, that he should communicate the efforts of the government now to his former comrades who are still there fighting for a ‘lost cause’ after being misled by the principles of Marxism and Maoism that are even abandoned by their proponents and sponsors in all parts of the world,” Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Jesus Dureza said.
Prior to his surrender, Legaspi is the NDF’s spokesperson in the Far South Mindanao.
“He also said that word should be sent to those rebels to respect the decisions of their comrades who abandoned their ranks after realising the futility of their cause,” Dureza added.
Legaspi, along with his wife, Wendy, decided to surrender due to health reasons.
Currently, the peace negotiations between the government and the communist movement have been suspended following series of attacks from the New People’s Army. (with reports from oppap)
