A STILL unidentified gunman shot and killed an unarmed police officer who was jogging on  del Carmen Ave., Zone 4, Del Carmen here on Thursday morning.

Senior Insp. Felix Rabago, Tambo police station commander, identified the victim as SPO4 Junas Balbutin, a member of the Iligan City Police Office.

Rabago said witnesses said they heard gunbursts and then officer shouted and told them to run away and clear the road because he was shot.

Balbutin was later found sprawled on the ground, face downward, and bloodied.

Police, quoting witnesses, said the gunman fled on a motorcycle. Investigators said it was possible the gunman had an accomplice.

Nurse Jeraco Rosco of Ambulance Rescue 911 said the officer no longer showed signs of life when they arrived at the crime scene.

Senior Insp. Joel Lee said crime scene investigators collected Balbutin’s black wallet containing his police ID, driver’s license, Philhealth ID, MSU-IIT Cooperative ID, AFPSLAI ID, a BIR card, a P100 bill, and a wrist watch.
