DID you see the pictures of asphalt roads in various cities in India melting due to extremely scorching heat, running up to about 48 degrees Celsius (or 118 degrees Farenheit), in that country? All I was able to say, when I saw those devastating pictures, was “wow”! Truly, what God warned in Deuteronomy 28:25, 22-23 of the Bible is now happening, virtually around the world.
As a result of that very hot temperature, some 1,118 people were killed mostly from heat strokes, dehydration, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion. Reports also say that tens of thousands of India citizens across the continent are suffering through powercuts from overloaded electrical grids. Please see http://gizmodo.com/photos-of-indias-deadly-street-melting-heat-wave-1707186192.
What is really scary about all these is the fact that we in the Philippines are starting to feel the heated temperature and atmosphere, almost everywhere in the country’s 7,100 islands. I am sure it wouldn’t be long before heat coming from 48 degrees Celsius temperatures will also afflict us. Antidote against this heat? Read the Bible and pray, earnestly, truthfully, and sincerely!
••
I can only agree with the conclusion from the fora and summits, and meetings and conferences, that have been and are still being held in Metro Manila and in other parts of the country, which say that the Philippines must furiously prepare for the inevitable coming of natural calamities, and the death and destruction that they will bring, like the ones now happening in India.
Unfortunately though, nothing good ever came out from these meetings and conferences, even if millions and millions of government and private funds have already been spent and will still be sent for these meetings and conferences, and even for any and all supposed disaster management and risk reduction programs that will be drawn up.
The reason? Let me reiterate: there is something strategically missing from the present approaches to disaster management and risk reduction programs, both here and around the world. What is this something that is strategically missing? It is the consideration that natural calamities, arising from global warming and climate change, have a spiritual angle that cannot and must not be ignored.
••
What is the spiritual angle about global warming? It is found in various parts of the Christian Bible, particularly in its Deuteronomy 28:15 and 22-24, and in Matthew 7:24-27. All of the biblical passages are saying that global warming and climate change will come, as curses from God, all because man is no longer listening to God, and is no longer obeying Him.
Because man has turned his back on God––because he no longer reads God’s Bible and because he is no longer obeying God––he has become capable of evil, becoming ever so greedy for money and power. And this greediness caused him to desecrate the very environment in which he is living––cutting trees wantonly, poisoning the air with carbon from his factories, destroying almost everything around him.
God saw all these. In fact, in Genesis 6:5-7 and in Romans 6:23, God recognized the evil in man. So He warned man about the result of man’s evil, particularly in the verses that we cited here: death and destruction will come from global warming. Yet man is hard-headed, and has refused to give up his evil greediness. Indeed, there is hell to pay for being greedy.
