THERE are a lot of similarities during Christ’s era and contemporary Philippines. There is that political unrest, clergies living an unpriestly lifestyle, and everyone is waiting for a savior thinking they can find him among the politicians.

If Christ was a Filipino he would have been born in a health center by a licensed practitioner and covered by Philhealth, thanks to the DOH mandate. The three kings would have been midwives and nurses.

If he was a Filipino, millions would have lined up to have a share of his five loaves and two fishes as is the case when Filipinos hear of free food. He would have also consecrated and shared rice and tuba (coconut wine) in his last supper.

But most importantly his teachings would have been exactly the same. While people would root for politicians to save them from their earthly misery, he would say change starts when you can love your neighbor as yourself. And by that, it would mean to teach those around you how to fish instead of just giving them a free meal. It would mean to minimize being so materialistic and live simply so that others may simply live because after all a man doesn’t just live by bread alone. It would mean to live in small communities who share each others resources instead of profit from them.

His miracles would have been seen as tricks and magic and it will spread like wildfire like any gossips in this country, but he would surely be more remembered for hanging out with employees and jeepney drivers, with vendors and job orders. And he will surely be loved by millions just as we love Quiboloy, Villarde, and Bo Sanchez except that unlike the three he would not even have a smart cellphone, much more own a car and have a thick bank account.

If Christ was a Filipino, his number one enemies would be the corrupt politicians since he would always speak with no holds-barred against crooked ways, but that would also mean him having enemies with some of our priests as well – the present day pharisees (not all of course), who live wealthy lifestyles, you will be shocked.

He will surely be invited to a Senate hearing using aid of legislation as an excuse and solons would make a grand show of their kangaroo court mocking the justice system just so some of them will have media exposure and higher approval rating. But I doubt if he would ever exercise his right to remain silent.

If Jesus was a Filipino, he would not be crucified by the people, because most of us would be too busy to care but he will surely be assassinated by someone in power whom he would have offended in one of his preachings.

Christ may not have been a Filipino, but with what’s going on around us today I bet he would be one in his second coming.
