Iligan City — “We will just accept the anger and embarrassment.”

This was the gist of the statement of City Administrator Atty. Leo Zaragoza to media the other day in the wake of the furor over the defects in the temporary market at the site of the Iligan City Bus and Jeepney terminal at Tambo this city.

Zaragoza’s statement comes at the heels of a video posted on Facebook in which water came cascading like waterfalls all over the roofs of the temporary terminal during a heavy downpour Sunday afternoon here. The downpour happened around 4:00 pm when the terminal was already teeming with people who were getting ready for the scheduled transfer of vendors from Palao market Tuesday.

Zaragoza said they already contacted the contractor of the market. He could not be reached though and he did not say who the contractor is.

To note, the transfer of the vendors in the market at Palao had been postponed several times, the last of which was on Feb. 2 of this year.

Melanio Siao, the owner of said site at Bagsakan 2 had already given the vendors that ultimatum and some portions of the area had already been fenced to stress the need that he already wanted to get rid of them.

The city government though was able to talk the owner into agreeing to some postponement as they had still to correct some defects on the structure where the vendors would be transferred. Defects that were noted included low ceilings, correction on the drainage, putting up electricity, and others.

The P43-million temporary market at the site did not have an estimated date of completion.

An interview with some of the concerned market vendors there revealed that some vendors had the same numbers in the raffles for the stalls that they were to occupy, hence the ensuing chaos.

It was learned that vendors at Palao Bagsakan 1 were also told to vacate the site since a “modern market” was to be built there. This is according to Virgie Hunsan, head of the department overseeing the markets.

About 30 percent of the vendors at Bagsakan 2 have been transferred now at the temporary market.
