Jose Pantoja, City Information Officer yesterday said the purok elections will be on Feb. 18. It will be from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, he added. Deadline for filing is on Feb. 16, Pantoja added.

The city’s 44 barangays have 922 puroks and each prospective candidate must be a resident of the baran-gay on which he wants to run for the respective position, for six months.

Each candidate must state in his Certificate of Candidacy who will be their Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

There will no longer be elections on the latter positions and once the Purok President, is elected, automatic, the ones named in the CoC will be the other officers.

The CoC, Pantoja said is to be filed at the City Mayor’s office and forms are available for said activity. This is in coordination with the Department of Education here, Pantoja said and such activity is provided for in the Local Government Code.

This is a “first” for the city, and maybe, for Mindanao, he said.

This process is being done, to prevent any troubles as to who the Purok President is as in the past, there were confusions as to who as some groups just took it upon themselves to suddenly elect Purok Presidents anytime they so desire without following proper procedures. There are no more zones, he said as some barangays have also their so-called “zones.”

“This is not for political reasons, as others are suspecting,” Pantoja said.

He added that Cong. Frederick Siao should refrain from holding a parallel purok elections since Siao does not hold an executive office but legislative.
