With 19 participants from Butuan City, Tandag City, Iligan City, and Lianga, Surigao del Sur; the competition gathered several of the top local surfers against top skimboarder’s in Northeastern Mindanao.

The event was divided into two categories, the 15-year-old and younger Grommets category and the 16-year-old and older Masters category.

Christian Quitat, 23-years-old from Iligan City dominated the Masters with 27.7 points to take the first place followed by 26-years-old Jesur Ortiz of Tandag City with 21.3 points edging over Butuan’s 18-years-old skimboarder Jusmil Cagape’s points of 19.8.

As one of the top skimboarders in Northern Mindanao, Quitat from Fuentes, Maria Christina in Iligan City expressed that the sport would hopefully grow, gain recognition and encourage local government units as well as sponsors to help out on its development.

“There is no investment in the sport; the beach, sand and waves are there; the investment it all need is the support from LGU’s and sponsors to keep it going and to help keep our youth away from illegal vices,” said Quintat.

Quintat who has won competitions in Mati and Cagayan de Oro in the past, hopes to encourage and inspire enthusiasts from other places to take the sport and develop their skills.

Ethel Lou Yuson, organizer of the event from the BXU Boardriding Enthusiasts stated that the sport has so much potential for Butuan City if only officials will support its growth.

“Skimboarding is already here. It has developed and built its foundation long time ago, thanks to our pioneering skimboarders who’ve passed on their boards and supported local gromms,” said Yuson.
