AT sixty-seven, I did not feel that I was past my retirement age. I actually retired from the private sector at the age of sixty and until now I’m engaged in some regulatory compliance jobs in the city government.

Well and good. The engagement kept me on my toes especially when we had to physically do the rounds in thematic and routine inspection and monitoring of entities that are subject to regulations by the Regulatory Compliance Board, the Joint Inspection Team, and the City Price Coordinating Council.  Add to that, the tasks associated with the smoke-free and anti-ASF campaigns.

The monitoring of my physical condition was more of a compliance (no pun intended) than to see how fit I still was, until my uric acid level rose to almost twice the maximum limit of 7.0 units. My UA reading was 12.6. It was the beginning of some revelations.

My loving wife and personal nurse, Juliet, suggested to my physician to subject my whole abdomen to an ultrasound procedure to check on the other vital organs within me. Lo and behold! The readings won’t be a cause for celebration.

Even then, I told myself everything would be fine, until I found it difficult to literally stand up on my own two feet, even with the aid of crutches or some other souls. As soon as my feet reached the ground, I felt the excruciating pain that made me think, “Basin mao na ni!”  To the hospital we had to go, and because I was immobilized by the pain, an ambulance had to fetch me at home.

The problem was not limited to the uric acid level. The liver and kidneys had to be monitored too because of ultra high SGPT and SGOT, and creatinine, readings.  Ah, now I understand the almost unbearable pain in my lumbar region. But life has to go on.

At one point in the hospital, I had to take 11 capsules and tablets in the morning, about six at noon time, and eight in the evening, aside from the pain reliever to ease the immobilizing torture in my feet.

I thought then that I was invincible, forgetting that I am sixty-seven.

To make a long story short, and so as not to bore my dear readers, I am now back at home taking oral medications administered by my personal nurse, my ex-girlfriend, now my Queen Juliet. I have begun to be ambulant without the aid of a cane and very soon will be back in circulation.

Thanks to all for the prayers and well-wishes. I cannot thank you enough.  The medical team at Ma. Reyna Xavier U Hospital also did a lot to help me recover fast. Thanks to Sister Evelyn, Dr. Erwin Dayupay, Dr. Tony Carpio, my siblings, and all those who wished me well, including Facebook friends, and my sons, Jeiu, Jose, and OJ and his wife Dotie.  Collectively, you are one good reason I am still here.

Remember, I am not going anywhere.  As yet.
