IF a more serious scrutiny is to be applied with what is happening at present between half-brothers Sen. JV Ejercito and former Sen. Jinggoy Estrada who are the children of only one man by two different mothers, and what full-blooded siblings Makati City Mayor Abby Binay Campos and former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay are similarly undergoing at the same time, we will not fail to realize that there is a very important message from their common experience.

If the truth be told, this political in-fighting among very close relatives had been going on for quite a long time now in this country, from Aparri, Cagayan, to Jolo, Sulu. In my home province of Tarlac alone, the fierce political struggle between former Tarlac Representatives Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. and Eduardo “Boss Danding” Cojuangco Jr., related as first cousins because their fathers were brothers, has become an iconic symbol of family strife ignited by politics.

What is the message here? Simple: There are no relatives when political positions are at stake. Many politicians in this country have always been, are now, and will always be, preoccupied with nothing but their own political triumphs. If relatives, friends, and associates would prove to be obstacles to the victories they have been dreaming of, politicians will not even think twice, nor hesitate even for one second only, to sideline, or even totally eliminate, these obstacles.

It doesn’t fail to impress me whenever I am compelled to meditate on family members fighting one another just because of politics, that what is happening to them could be traced to one English saying which goes like this: “… whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make them mad…”

What this means to me is that, the gods first cause those whom they wish to destroy to become mad, insane, or deprived of reason. Indeed, it would become a lot easier to destroy someone who has gone mad or insane, or deprived of reason. A study of world history, both biblical and historical, will show that many individuals who wielded great power during their heydays inevitably got deprived of power after the intelligence that they used in becoming powerful in the first place seem to have been taken away from them.

That is what will surely happen (if it is not happening already at this point) to many politicians in the Philippines which the gods already want ousted from power–their rational thinking would first be removed from them, causing their downfall. Now tell me: isn’t it true that it is madness and deprivation of reason for relatives to be fighting against other because of politics? This unfortunate turn of events for these politicians would make them easy targets by their enemies when the battle comes. Well, I hope families in politics will continue fighting!
