MY lawyer son,Olezardo Jose (OJ to many) got married in a sunrise wedding on Dec. 15, 2018 toDorothy Mae Dayak, a registered nurse who is currently finishing the term ofher contract in an overseas employment. OJ is second to our (Juliet and me) eldest son, Jose Edgardo II (Jeiu),and is an elder brother of our third son, Jose Olegario (Jojo).

Dotie is the second daughter to Rody and Merlina Dayak whose eldest daughter Deling, is married to Dennis.  Dotie has two brothers, Dylan and Rashid. Pareng Rody is a retired military official while Mareng Merlina is succeeding as a businesswoman.  She had several engagements in the non-governmental organizations that dealt with the poor segment of society.

OJ and Dotie were classmates at XU high school and were partners in their juniors prom.  They said they did not have eyes for each other yet at that time.  It was more of called-by-necessity because they did not have their respective partners as the prom neared.

Of course, they went through the roller coaster ride that sweethearts experience, e.g., break up here and there, but in the end reconciliation was sweetest with the exchange of vows as husband and wife.

I have attended several Christian weddings but that of OJ and Dotie was one of a kind.  The officiating pastor, Mel Santos, flew from Manila just to officially bind the two as one, along with Jesus Christ as the center of their marriage.

The wedding ceremony actually had not only one highlight, i.e., the exchange of vows of the groom and bride.  It had two other highlights which I believe touched the heart of everybody.

OJ and Dotie made their testimonies as sinners just like all of us.  They encapsulated the trials and their personal shortcomings and how they overcame the obstacles of their respective lives.  OJ even narrated how and why he failed at his first attempt at the bar exams, and the episode when Dotie left him for breaking a promise to shape up.  Yes, he was shipped out by Dotie. Not once but thrice.

Both of them narrated how Jesus Christ became the center of their lives and made a vow that Christ will continue to be in the center of their marriage.

My wife Juliet and I, and probably Rody and Merlina too, were literally taken aback when OJ paid tribute to his parents – that’s us – and narrated how he started to question why we had to stand by his side in his times of darkness.  But then in the end, he understood that as parents there is not quitting on our children, Jeiu and Jojo included.

Then OJ and Dotie gave their parents new sets of wedding rings, as if we too were renewing our marital vows in a triple wedding during that sunrise wedding.  I saw many eyes shedding tears, probably of joy.

OJ, take good care of Dotie.  Cherish her like no other.  Remember your vow to make Jesus Christ the center of your marriage.

Dotie, we have welcomed you to our family, and we thank your parents for accepting OJ back, and for welcoming him to your family as well.  You have somehow fulfilled the dream of your mother-in-law, Nanay Juliet, to have a daughter.  We are sure you and OJ will live a life that’s full of happiness and joy.  Just keep the love burning.

Yes, the experience was one of a kind.
