REP. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District yesterday said his counterpart in the 1st District broke his word that he would prevent any of his children from running for public office under the 2016 ticket of reelectionist Mayor Oscar Moreno.

Rodriguez, who is set on filing his certificate of candidacy for mayor today, said he and 1st District Rep. Rolando Uy talked in the Batasan Pambansa two weeks ago, and they agreed to support each other in the 2016 elections on the condition that none of Uy’s sons would seek public office under Moreno’s group.

“This is the main reason why we adopted him (Uy) during the CDP’s convention. Nagpabilin gihapon among paghinigalaay walay labot ang politika,” said Rodriguez.

Uy filed his certificate of candidacy at the ciy office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday morning. His son, Rainer Joaquin, also filed his COC together with Mayor Moreno and their candidate for congressman in the 2nd District, ex-councilor Edgar Cabanlas.

Uy’s younger brother Roland Sherwin is also running for a city council seat.

“Nagsabot kami ni Congressman Uy nga walay iyang anak nga iyang ipadagan uban kang Moreno. Nagkasabot kami nga magtinabangay kami og ako magpabilin gihapon sa among gikasabutan nga magsupporta sa iya,” Rodriguez said.

He said he was disappointed and dismayed over the decision of the Uys because “we had an agreement that he will support me yet that agreement was not fulfilled.

Rodriguez added: “I  really thought that it was a gentlemen’s agreement.”

He said the Centrist Democratic Party (CDP) would not replace Uy as it adopted congressional candidate in the 1st District, and he would keep his word. “We will still support him, and will continue to support him. Dili nana makambyo… I pledged to support him, and I will keep my word.”

He said his group was unfazed despite the setback, and he and other CDP candidates would proceed with their filing of COCs today.

Rodriguez said it was now up to Uy’s conscience. “Usapang lalaki, klaro kaayo kana. Kung mobiya siya kanato, kita dili mobiya kaniya… Konsensiya na lamang kaniya… He had his reason, siya ra ang nakabalo.”
