The group is a federation of urban poor organizations in the region.

Francisco Pagayaman, Kadamay-NMR spokesperson told Gold Star Daily they started legworking the street vendors since the weekend for the mass mobilization yesterday afternoon.

“We salute to all street vendors. We will fight against public-private partnership and we say no to “karate,” Pagayaman said. “Karate” is the vernacular term used when street vendors are forcibly removed from the market side streets.

The group zeroed in on the upcoming renovation of Cogon Market and asked who would stand to gain from the renovation.

He said if the renovation of Cogon Market would mean more “karate” operations, then it is well within the rights of the street vendors to rally against the renovation.

In Kadamay-NMR’s estimate, there are around 1,000 street vendors in Carmen and Cogon public markets who have been “victimized inhumanely” by the city’s traffic enforcement office –– Road and Traffic Administration.
