SURIGAO City – A tourist died while four others were hurt after lightning struck the most visited islet sandbar off the coast of General Luna town in Siargao Island Sunday afternoon.

Police the tourists were just sitting on the beach and taking photos.

Maj. Joel Liong, General Luna police chief, the five tourists were rushed to the district hospital in the town of Dapa.

One of them, Lee Christian Ragosta Zamora of Barangay Taloto, Tagbilaran City, was pronounced dead in the hospital.

Others injured were Elain Jhane Ragosta Zamora, 19, of Barangay Taloto, Tagbilaran; Princess Figuracion Jayme, 23, of Barangay Banilad, Cebu City; Suzanne Simagol, 27, of Barangay Sun Valley, Paranaque; and tour guide Grace Rodriquez Tolibas, 28 of General Luna, Siargao Island.

“It was unfortunate that lighting struck the (Naked Island). Most of those injured were wet after swimming,” said Liong.

Liong said the Naked Island is part of a three-island package that tourists take when visiting the surfing town of General Luna. The package includes visits to the Daku and Guyam islands.
