THE Environmental Management Board (EMB) has warned Limketkai center and a supermarket that it would suspend their operations unless they put in place measures against water pollution.

EMB director for northern Mindanao Reynaldo Digamo told the Gold Star Daily that the Bureau has issued a notice of violation of the Clean Water Act to the  Limketkai group and the firm operating Shopwise supermarket at the east annex building of the Limketkai center in Lapasan.

Digamo said the firms were given 10 working days from June 20 to institute mitigating measures to address the pollution problem or make corrections.

The firms, according to Digamo, were found to have violated provisions in Republic Act 9275 which calls for a holistic program on water quality management.

The law, he said, recognizes that water quality management issues cannot be separated from concerns about water sources and ecological protection, water supply, public health and quality of life.

Digamo said EMB took samples of waste water form Limketkai center and Shopwise and tested these to have exceeded the minimum standards of pollutants set by the government.

After being sent notices, he said, the firms sent representatives to the EMB to discuss what should be done.

Digamo said the establishments have no choice but comply with the law or face possible suspension of operations. In the event of a suspension order, he said, the establishments would not be able to resume operation until corrections have been made.

If the firms failed to pass the wate water standards by the end of this month, Digamo said, the EMB would forward its recommendations to the Pollution Adjudication Board for appropriate action.
