March 22 is World Water Day. Events are organized on and around this day to increase people’s awareness of water’s importance in environment, agriculture, health and trade.

Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. Under the theme Water and Jobs, the year 2016 provides an important opportunity to show how enough quantity and quality of water can change workers’ lives and livelihoods –– and even transform societies and economies. The first World Day for Water was observed in 1993.

A large number of the world’s labor force work in water related sectors and nearly all jobs depend on water and those that ensure its safe delivery. The Cagayan de Oro City Water District alone has around six hundred employees to carry out its mandate to provide excellent water service to the community it serves.

For the World Water Day celebration in the Philippines, the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) encouraged all water districts to conduct Training on Livelihood Community Project for a chosen barangay.

World Water Day facts will also be shown on the TV screen in COWD’s Main Office at Corrales Avenue. COWD customers can also view videos on various livelihood programs courtesy of DTI-Mis.Or. (pr)
