A LOW pressure area (LPA) near Mindanao has intensified into a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a weather bulletin yesterday.

As of 10 am, the center of the tropical depression was estimated based on all available data at 1,440 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (8.7°N, 139.4°E) with maximum winds of 55 kph near the center. It is forecast to move west-northwest at 20 kph.

It is forecast to enter the PAR this morning and will be locally named “Nonoy” — the 14th tropical cyclone to affect the country this year.

The tropical depression is expected to be at 1,010 km east of Surigao City by this morning.

By tomorrow morning, it is forecast to be at 445 km east of Borongan City, Samar and at 220 km northeast of the same city by Monday morning.

By Tuesday morning, it is expected to be at 70 km east of Virac, Catanduanes and at 205 km east of Infanta, Quezon Wednesday morning.

Pagasa said the tropical depression is expected to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over the eastern section of Southern Luzon and Visayas areas beginning Sunday as it continues to approach Eastern Visayas-Bicol Region area.

Flashfloods and landslides are possible in the affected areas, the agency said.
