Malasag Elementary School is the adopted school of the Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro which has been conducting the “Share a Meal” weekly feeding program there since 2004. Pres. Netnet Camomot, “Adopt a Barangay Elementary School” Chair Joy Tabor, Past Pres. Linda Costales, President-Elect Emma Tan, Auditor Paolo Acenas, my daughter Elaine who was that day’s paparazzi, and yours truly were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the whole day with the students, parents and teachers.

It was 3-in-1 for the three activities: celebration of the Nutrition Month, the weekly feeding program, and the inductions of the General Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) and the Homeroom PTA.

We were finally able to meet their new principal Marcelo Mabalos and he was very appreciative and promised that he will start documenting our support so it can be included in their annual “Brigada Eskwela” report.  The day started right away with the fun contests per grade level, the Poster-Making Contest by Grade 6, Invented Snacks by Grade 5, and Vegetable Dish contest by Grade 4. The lower grade levels performed their tula, dance and rap!

The parents also played an integral role with their Food Display. The whole school ground was filled with green and leafy vegetables, most of which were organically homegrown by the families.

Joy and Linda had the difficult job in judging the Poster-Making Contest and the parents’ Food Display, while Pres. Netnet, Paolo and I, of course, willingly judged the Invented Snacks and Vegetable Dish contests. The students outdid themselves and impressed all of us. Though it was a contest but everyone felt like a winner mostly because everyone went home with a prize.

The generous RC Kalayaan Rotarians, whose kind hearts we can always rely on, donated cash and “chicheria” for the activity. A little kindness definitely went a long way on this one.
