At first glance, it looked like 17-year-old student Kenneth Gala killed himself by jumping into a well with a rope tied around his neck at Purok 2A, Casinglot in Tagoloan town, Misamis Oriental.

But police said Gala’s death came after a drinking binge with his friends the night before.

Gala, who was in senior high at the Cagayan de Oro College-Phinma in Puerto, had wanted to be an engineer.

It was Gala’s father Roquillo who discovered what happened to his son. He said he was trying to fetch water when he noticed that there was something heavy below.

“Gasag-ob unta ko sa atabay dihang natingala ko nganong bug-at kaayo ang butangana sa tubig. Nagpatabang ko sa silingan. Nakidnat ko kay ako mang anak ang akong nakita,” Roquillo narrated.

Roquillo said told investigators that his son went out with some of his friends the night before, and they had a drinking binge at one of the stores in Casinglot.

Roquillo said one of his son’s buddies disclosed that the younger Gala felt bad because of a problem but he tried to act like there was nothing wrong.

“Pero matud pa sa usa sa iyang amigo nga kamulong inum misulti daw si Kenneth nga ‘katapusan na ni nga inum’ pero wala lang to nila balibaliha ug nangatawa pa gani daw sila,” Roquillo said.

Roquillo however said it was unthinkable for his son to take his own life, and he could not think of a reason why the younger Gala would do that.

It was learned that Gala’s mother is a worker in Dubai.

Roquillo said that if it was a case of suicide, he could only surmise that his son was heartbroken.

He said his son had a girlfriend, and he could only suspect that they may have parted ways.

Insp. Allan Oniana, Tagoloan police chief, said investigators were digging deeper into Gala’s death to find out what really happened.

“Atong palawoman atong imbestigasyon,” said Oniana.

Oniana said Gala’s father swore that everything was well in their house and that they had no misunderstanding.

Oniana however said that police took note that Gala was drunk the night before and that he was with at least two friends.

“Nanghanggat kuno ni si Kenneth nga mag-inum sila,” Oniana said.
