Man’s continued search for happiness

IN my whole life, I continue to be puzzled by man’s search for happiness.

Some spend their time in the cockpits, some in majhong sessions, others are travelling to places in the entire world, there are others who simply love accumulating wealth and expand their business to give them a high, others collect expensive cars, others collect women while some simply visit the most exotic restaurants to taste food, etc.

But when will this end?  There appears to be no end, others who have much money do not stop searching for more money, others who have cars do not content themselves with one alone but with the latest models, other who have beautiful girlfriends do not stop searching for more beautiful girlfriends and there are some who have become senators still aspire to become president of the country.  Man simply does not stop looking for something that can make him high despite finding already one he has been looking for.

It is simply because he plans to make the earth a place for which he needs to enjoy.  Without finding it, he feels that his life has been useless.  His life has been without an achievement of which he can be proud of to present to his friends.  Thus, people simply tells you that you are useless if they don’t find something in you that you can be proud of.

But I have a friend who simply operates an ice grating machine.  That has been his business ever since.  He has built his house out of its income then shares to all people who come to his house for help.  He is a member of the Perpetual Dawn Rosary, a movement of the Catholic Church which allows the image of the Virgin Mary to stay in one’s house for twenty four hours and then transfer the image later in another house, a daily routine every four o’clock in the morning to six o’clock every day for the last twenty five years .  He also serves the church as a member of the Eucharistic Ministry which gives holy communion to the church goers.

Then when her daughter got a problem with her marriage, he simply smiled and commented that he is only a man and has no power to change any circumstances that happens in one’s life.

Many parties have been held in his house because of the ministries he has joined with the church and its always non-stop eating because he gives and shares to his friends and ministry members everything that he has.  I have never heard him talk ill of anybody, he always talks of happy things and I have never seen such a very happy person.  He is so happy after every day that he attends the mass.

Then, I finally asked him, “Brod, why are so happy?”

Then he answered me matter-of-factly, “Brod I am just living a borrowed life.  All of us will die and go back to God.  I am always happy preparing my life at the day when my Creator who gave me this borrowed life will bring me back to him where I will be made to account for everything I did.”

The answer floored me and I have never heard such kind of effective evangelization in my whole life.

Those words changed the course of my life!
