ILIGAN City–Acting Mayor Ruderic Marzo has filed his certificate of candidacy for mayor before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) late last week.

Marzo filed as a substitute for Rep. Vicente Belmonte Jr. who withdrew from the 2016 mayoral race. Belmonte earlier announced his decision not to pursue his mayoral bid, citing threats to his life as a reason.

City information officer Divina Suson said Marzo did this after he secured his certificate of nomination from the administration Liberal Party (LP).

City elections officer Annaliza Barredo said the documents were in order, and that Marzo is now the LP’s mayoral candidate here.

She said “there is no more problem with that” unless somebody questions the move and files a petition before the Comelec.

Marzo is challenging the reelection bid of detained Mayor Celso Regencia and four others. Regencia has been linked to the December 2014 ambush of Rep. Belmonte’s group near the Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental.
